How To Test Any Cognitive Supplement In 30 Days

Last updated · 17 September 2026

Most people finish a bottle of a cognitive supplement with no idea whether it worked. That is not because the effect is always absent; it is because nobody set the test up in a way that could produce an answer.

Here is a method that takes about ninety seconds a week and produces something you can actually read back.

Rule one: change one thing

If you begin a supplement, a new sleep schedule and a gym membership in the same fortnight, you will learn nothing about any of them. Pick the supplement as the variable and hold everything else roughly where it is for the month. Not perfectly — roughly is enough.

This is the rule people break most often and it invalidates everything downstream of it.

Rule two: write down what you would notice

Before day one, spend two minutes writing three specific things you would expect to change. Not "feel sharper" — that is unfalsifiable. Something like: how often I reread a paragraph, whether I reach for my phone mid-task, whether names come back in meetings.

Specific beats grand. You are building a measuring stick, and a vague one measures nothing.

Rule three: one line a week, written down

This is the whole method. Sunday evening, one line in your phone against each of the three things. That is it.

Why written rather than remembered: cognitive change is uniquely difficult to recall accurately, because the faculty doing the recalling is the thing that may have changed. Four weeks later your memory of week one will have quietly reshaped itself around whatever you now believe. A note does not do that.

What a month of notes looks like

week 1 week 2 week 3 week 4 FOUR DATA POINTS BEAT A FEELING Illustrative. The shape of your own line is the only one that matters.
Four honest marks on a page will tell you more than a month of trying to remember how you felt.

Rule four: do not weigh the evidence daily

Checking every morning whether you feel sharper guarantees a useless answer, because day-to-day cognition swings wildly on sleep, stress, caffeine, hydration and whether the week is going well. Weekly smooths that out. Daily just measures your mood.

Rule five: know what a negative result looks like

Decide in advance what "no" looks like, or you will never conclude it. A reasonable standard: four weekly notes with no movement on any of the three things you chose, on a month where nothing else went badly wrong.

That is a real finding. Act on it — that is what a refund window exists for.

Where 30 days sits for this category

One month is enough to detect the faster-moving things: attention, mental energy, whether you are rereading less. It is not long enough to say much about the slower ones. If the month-one notes show a small positive movement, that is the signal to run the full eight to twelve weeks rather than the signal to stop.

Worth saying: if your three chosen markers are getting worse rather than staying flat, that is not a supplement question. See a doctor.
